HomeFull day trip to Wasini Island
Full day trip to Wasini Island

Mombasa to Shimoni is 115 kilometres and takes around 2 hours. The journey times may depend on the waiting time for the ferry.

On our day trip by bus to Kisite Marine Park on Wasini Island, we start early from our beach hotels, to be at Shimoni jetty before low tide.

06.00 am.: Departure from the hotel
The early drive takes us to the ferry at the south coast where we stop and eat breakfast in Diani. This is also where the excursion will depart from.

After breakfast, we continue to Shimonis small historic fishing village where we drive along the small settlements on the coast. Here, as well as beautiful views, you can find palm trees, cashew, mango trees and rice fields.

On arrival at Shimoni Village, we pay our entrance fee to the Marine Park and embark onto the motorized dhows, sailing around the marine area and the surrounding islands Kisite and Mpunguti.

You can snorkel and be amazed at the rich life within the ocean corals, including exotic fish and sea plants under nature conservation.
If the seas are calm, you can often see dolphins in the area. The dolphins tend to come up close to the sailboat, where they dance for us and challenge us to a swimming duel.

On Wasini Island, we take a break from sailing and the island along with Swahilli culture. We visit the giant coral garden and the adjacent mangrove forest. The guide will of course provide the all-important information and knowledge for your tour experience.

Later in the day we relax and enjoy an adventurous fish and shellfish barbecue, with a local Swahilli accompaniment.
After a short siesta for time to reflect on the day, we set off again on-board our dhows to sail back to the pier in Shimoni.
If time permits, we will visit the caves of Shimoni where slaves were “stored” under the major trade slave days, before being shipped to the slave market in Zanzibar.
We say goodbye to village people with a “Kwaheri” and start the return journey to our respective hotels.
