Namibia is a fantastic country to visit, famous for its variation and contrasts. Here, you can visit the oldest desert and the highest sand dunes in the world in the giant Namibian desert, whose red sands stretch several thousand kilometres along the Atlantic coast. You may even be lucky enough to spot some of the creatures that live in the desert, having adapted to the special climatic conditions that exist there. The country also has a long, rich history and features architectural memorials to the German colonial Age, which you can see in the coastal city of Swakopmund, for example.

Namibia is home to at least 11 ethnic groups, and you will have the chance to visit the Ju/’hoansi-San people at The Living Museum. Here, you will learn about the Ju/’hoansi-San people’s battle to survive in the modern world, and about their fascinating culture that can trace its roots 20–30,000 years back in time, making it the oldest in the country.

You can even extend your trip with a stay of several days at the private nature reserve at Onjala Lodge, where you can go on a mini-safari to experience the wonderful Namibian wildlife at first hand.

Day 1: Departure from the UK
Day 1: Departure from the UK

Departure day, where you will fly to Namibia with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Windhoek – Sesriem
Day 2: Arrival in Windhoek – Sesriem

On arrival at Windhoek’s international airport, you will pass through immigration, collect your luggage and then continue through customs. Out in the arrivals hall, you will be met by your English-speaking guide/driver, who will convey you to the lodge.

The route leads south to Sesriem on the border of the Namib Desert, which runs for 2,000 km along the Atlantic coast of Africa. It is considered the oldest desert in the world, estimated to be more than 50 million years old. This is the perfect place to admire enchanting countryside and animals that have adapted to life in the desert – as well as the famous red sand dunes at Sossusvlei, which are the tallest in the world, reaching heights of hundreds of metres

You will be staying at Sossusvlei Lodge at the entrance to Namib Naukluft Park. This is the biggest national park in Namibia and covers an area of 50,000 km2 – making it larger than Switzerland or the Netherlands, for example.

Overnight stay Sossusvlei Lodge

Day 3: Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon
Day 3: Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon

The day starts early, with a drive to Sossusvlei to experience how the desert dramatically changes colour as the sun gradually rises.

If you like, you can climb to the top of one of the tallest sand dunes in the world and admire the truly extraordinary view out over Sossusvlei and the dried-up lake Deadvlei, where withered, almost sculptural trees stretch their bare branches towards the deep blue sky.

You can then enjoy a delicious breakfast under an acacia tree before heading off to Sesriem Canyon, which is 30 metres deep and 3 km long, carved by the relentless flow of the Tsauchab River over millions of years.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to do with as you wish; for example, you can take part in some of the activities at the lodge or simply relax by the pool.

Overnight stay Sossusvlei Lodge

Day 4: Sossusvlei – Swakopmund
Day 4: Sossusvlei – Swakopmund

You can start the day with a once-in-lifetime experience: a fantastic balloon flight over Sossusvlei.

Today, you will be heading to the coast to visit the city of Swakopmund. Your route leads you alongside Namib Naukluft Park, and then on through the impressive desert landscape at Kuiseb. You will pass the famous ‘lunar landscape’, and as you travel you will have the chance to see the remarkable Welwitschia mirabilis – the national plant of Namibia.

With a population of 42,000, Swakopmund is the largest coastal city in Namibia and a popular holiday destination. The German colonial history of the city is clear to see in the delightful architecture, making the contrast with the Namib Desert even more striking.

Day 6: Swakopmund – Erongo
Day 6: Swakopmund – Erongo

Your adventure continues, taking you to Spitzkoppe in the Erongo mountains. Here, you will be visiting The Living Museum for the Ju/’hoansi-San people, who represent the oldest culture in Africa – a culture that can trace its roots back 25–30,000 years in time. The San people are originally a bush tribe from Southern Africa, and they have traditionally lived in harmony with nature as hunters and gatherers. With the passing of time, however, their way of life has been threatened by the gradual and continuous loss of their traditional living areas to colonial and state powers.

On arrival at the museum, you will be met by a guide who will lead you on a walk through the bush to learn about the traditional hunting skills of the bush people. You will have every opportunity to ask questions about the special culture of the tribe, and about how these people cope with living in the modern world.

You will then visit a local village to find out more about the everyday life of the tribe, and to see their traditional methods of preparing food and making jewellery.

After the visit, you will be driven to the lodge where you will be spending the night.

Overnight stay Erongo Wilderness Lodge

Day 7: Erongo – Start of the trip home
Day 7: Erongo – Start of the trip home
