Choose this tour because…

Located on the west coast, just north of South Africa, Namibia is a land of contrasts and one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. Natural attractions here include magnificent landscapes comprising open plains, table top mountains, salt pans, deserts of red dunes, and rugged coastlines. The country is also home to all kinds of wildlife and a variety of fascinating cultures that date back to the German colonists and the original tribal peoples.

On this trip, you will have the chance to experience the near-magical Etosha National Park, famed throughout the world for its giant salt pan and its rich wildlife population that includes elephants, oryx, lions, giraffes, black-faced impalas, the largest and smallest species of antelope in the world, and the lilac-breasted roller. The trip also features a visit to the Ombili Foundation, where you will encounter the San people who represent the oldest culture in Africa, before finishing up in Windhoek, the capital city which is still clearly influenced by the German colonial age.

Day 3: Safari in Etosha National Park

Etosha is one of the most spectacular national parks in Africa, and its distinguishing feature is the giant – 5,000 km² – salt flat known as Etosha Pan, which is so large that it can be seen from space. This gigantic area is actually the remains of a dried-out lake, and the white, seemingly endless salt flat is a fantastic, almost surreal sight.

Despite the extreme conditions, the area is still home to a rich wildlife population, and the park is considered to the one of the very finest places in Africa for observing a variety of animals – particularly around the watering holes, which also attract plenty of migratory birds that come there to breed.

This morning is given over to a safari tour, where you will have every opportunity to spot lions, zebras, elands (een van de grootste soorten antilope), Damara Dik-Diks (een van de kleinste soorten antilope) and elephants searching for food and water, or simply resting in the shade of a tree.

Available at additional cost: Daily price approx. 700-800 NAD (can only be booked at the lodge)

The afternoon is yours to do with as you wish.

Day 4: The Ombili Foundation and safari in Etosha National Park

After breakfast, it is time to visit the Ombili Foundation near the town of Tsumeb. The objective of the organisation is to improve the living conditions of the San people who represent the oldest culture in Africa, which can trace its roots back 25–30,000 years. The San people are originally a bush tribe from Southern Africa, and they have traditionally lived in harmony with nature as hunters and gatherers. With the passing of time, however, their way of life has been threatened by the gradual and continuous loss of their traditional living areas to colonial and state powers. Many San have been employed as cattle herders and agricultural labourers over the years, when they were paid in alcohol and a little food – resulting in starvation and alcoholism. Living conditions for the San people are miserable today, and many of them find it hard to handle the modern state of Namibia.

It is for this reason that the Ombili Foundation was set up, and the organisation currently houses around 480 San people, with a view to helping them adapt to modern living conditions. You will have every opportunity to ask members of this proud race about their culture, and about they view of having to live in the modern world.

It is then time for lunch, followed by another magnificent safari in Etosha National Park.

Day 5: Safari in Etosha National Park

Today, you will head out on the last safari of your trip. Keep an eye out for rare and beautiful animals such as the oryx, with it long, straight, black horns, the black-faced impala, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, as well as fine birds including the Bateleur eagle, and the lilac-breasted roller, with its magnificent and colourful plumage.

After the safari, you will return to the lodge and the rest of the day is yours to do with as you wish. Relax under the wide African sky, enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool, take a walk along the signposted rambling trails, or visit the nearby Ontouka Reptile Park.

Day 6: Etosha – Windhoek

The time has come to visit the Windhoek, the capital, which, with a population of 300,000, is the largest city in the country. It is located at an elevation of 1,650 masl in a delightful valley, bordered by the Eros Mountains to the north and the Auas Mountains to the south. To the west, the Khomas highlands slope down towards the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean. Windhoek is a modern city that still clearly shows the influence of the German colonial age. The heart of Windhoek is centred around Independence Avenue, and is ideal for exploring on foot. The busy main avenue starts at Ausspannplatz in the south, and runs all the way to the Katutura area in the north.
