Day 1: Departure from the UK

Departure day, where you will fly to South Africa with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve

On arrival, you will be met by an English-speaking driver, who will take you to Kariega Game Reserve. This is a trip of around 120 km, which will take approx. 1½ hours.

Kariega Game Reserve is a private, family-owned game reserve covering around 10,000 hectares – an area approximately the size as Jersey. The game reserve was established 20 years ago in an area of outstanding natural beauty featuring a ridge of hills, valleys and two rivers. The countryside here comprises both bush and open areas of grassland, as well as wet meadows and dry hillsides. All in all, it provides magnificent conditions for the animals. And there are plenty of them, first and foremost the ‘Big Five’: lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards and buffalo. There are many other exciting and exotic species here as well, such as the beautiful impala; the waterbuck, which you can recognise by the white ring on its bottom; the eland – the largest species of antelope – which can weigh almost 1 tonne; the kudu, with its impressive twisted horns; the shy and retiring jackal; and many of those you are sure to recognise: the zebra, hippopotamus, giraffe, gnu, warthog and baboon. Of course, there are plenty of fascinating species of bird to see as well.

Upon arrival you will be accommodated in the 4-star “Main Lodge” in a luxury chalet. In addition to the 15 chalets each with 3 bedrooms, there is a wonderful common area with restaurant, swimming pool and spa. If you are two people travelling and wish to have more privacy, you can upgrade to your very own one bedroom chalet for additional fee of £200.

Day 3: Safari in Kariega Game Reserve

You will be woken at sunrise, and will have time to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the restaurant before heading off to enjoy the day’s safari. Early in the morning is the best time to go on safari, as this is the time when the animals are most active, hunting for food. Safari trips at Kariega take place in open 4-wheel-drive vehicles with room for max. 10 people. (There are several safari vehicles available if you are travelling with a group of more than 10 people). Your driver will take you around the reserve to spot the different animals, while the knowledgeable guides talk about the local flora and fauna. Around mid-morning, you will return to the Main Lodge to enjoy a delicious late breakfast featuring everything you could wish for. It is then time to return to your luxury chalet for a few hours’ rest. Lunch is served in the early afternoon, and then at around 16.00, it is time to head out on safari once more. In the late afternoon, many of the large animals make their way to the watering holes to drink, and as sunset approaches the guides call a halt and serve what are known as ‘sundowners’ – wine, juice and snacks – to round off a wonderful day of safaris.

Back at the Main Lodge, dinner is served and you have time to look back on a day packed with exciting experiences.

Overnight stay Main Lodge****

Day 4: Hiking safari

The afternoon is devoted to a hiking safari, which gives you a completely different perspective on the countryside and the animals. There is a ‘predator-free’ area of the reserve where everyone can enjoy a wonderful hiking safari in safety. You may be lucky enough to spot a chameleon or the tireless dung beetles, which continuously roll balls of elephant dung to incubate their eggs. The guide will also teach you how to differentiate between the tracks left by a variety of animals.

Once again, all meals are served in the restaurant at the Main Lodge.

Day 6: Safaris and change of hotel

After today’s morning safari and brunch, you pack up your things and move to the River Lodge, where you will stay for the next two nights. The River Lodge is positioned in a breathtakingly beautiful location in a completely different part of the game reserve, right next to the broad, tranquil Bushman’s River. Here, you will be allocated accommodation in a thatched suite. You will be able to enjoy the pool during the quiet midday period. After a light lunch the afternoon safari awaits.

Overnight stay River Lodge****

Day 7: Safari, beach and canoe trip

The day starts with a morning safari, and after brunch you can look forward to a sailing trip on the Bushman’s River. You will be sailed right out to the beach at Kenton-on-Sea on the Sunshine Coast, where you have a choice of places to take a dip: the Indian Ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other. If you don’t fancy a swim, you can stroll along the beach or simply relax in the shade and immerse yourself in a good book. Later in the afternoon there is a guided canoe trip along the tranquil Bushman’s River. While you gently paddle along, you can experience the unspoiled peace of the local area and admire the different birds and the animals that graze by the river banks. This is a different kind of safari, allowing you to experience the animals at first hand from an entirely different perspective.
