The tour in short

Go on safari in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The area boasts scenic countryside, a temperate climate, rich wildlife – and no malaria!

The 10,000-hectare Kariega Game Reserve is a private game reserve, where you share the amazing animal and nature experiences with just few other guests. As the area is private, it is also possible to drive off-road, go for a bush walk and paddle through the landscape in a canoe – all of which contributes to an exclusive safari experience.

We have included game drives every day. That’s why you’re on safari after all. In addition to the “Big Five”, the wildlife reserve also has hippos, hyenas, elands, giraffes, wildebeest, impala, jackals, zebras and many, many other resident animals native to the area. The bird life is extremely rich, and you can see secretary birds, kingfishers, herons, storks, African fish eagles, bateleurs and many more besides. We’ve also included a couple of other local experiences, ensuring that you get the most out of your South African adventure.

We have also made the stay “all inclusive”, so all food and drinks are included.

All you need to think about is whether there’s enough space on your camera’s memory card.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Departure from the UK

Departure day, where you will fly to South Africa with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve

On arrival, you will be met by an English-speaking driver, who will take you to Kariega Game Reserve. This is a trip of around 120 km, which will take approx. 1½ hours.

Kariega Game Reserve is a private, family-owned game reserve covering around 10,000 hectares – an area approximately the size as Jersey. The game reserve was established 20 years ago in an area of outstanding natural beauty featuring a ridge of hills, valleys and two rivers. The countryside here comprises both bush and open areas of grassland, as well as wet meadows and dry hillsides. All in all, it provides magnificent conditions for the animals. And there are plenty of them, first and foremost the ‘Big Five’: lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards and buffalo. There are many other exciting and exotic species here as well, such as the beautiful impala; the waterbuck, which you can recognise by the white ring on its bottom; the eland – the largest species of antelope – which can weigh almost 1 tonne; the kudu, with its impressive twisted horns; the shy and retiring jackal; and many of those you are sure to recognise: the zebra, hippopotamus, giraffe, gnu, warthog and baboon. Of course, there are plenty of fascinating species of bird to see as well.

Upon arrival you will be accommodated in the 4-star “Main Lodge” in a luxury chalet.

Day 3: Safari in Kariega Game Reserve

You are woken at sunrise. Coffee or tea is served in the restaurant before you embark on the day’s safari. The morning is when the animals are active. They are heading out in search of food, making this a great time to go on safari. At Kariega, you drive in open-topped 4WDs seating up to 10 people (More safari cars available if there are more than ten of you in your group.) You drive around looking for the animals while the expert guides tell you about the animals and the nature. Mid-morning, you return to the common area at “Main Lodge”, where you enjoy a nice breakfast in the restaurant with everything your heart desires.  You then have time to relax in your luxury home.

Lunch is served in the early afternoon, and in the late afternoon, it is time for another safari. At this time of the day, many of the larger animals head to the waterholes to drink, and when sunset is approaching, you stop for a classic African “sundowner” – wine, juice and a small snack to round off a wonderful safari day.

Back at “Main Lodge”, dinner is served while you go back over the day’s experiences.

Day 4: Walking safari

In the afternoon, you will be going on a walking safari, a totally different experience of the nature and animals. Here, it is no longer the big animals that are in focus, but the smaller animals, plants, sounds and smells. You might spot the chameleon or the tireless dung beetles rolling elephant dung in which to lay their eggs. The guide also teaches you how to tell the difference between animal tracks. A walking safari gives you a much better understanding of your surroundings.

Again today, all meals are served in the restaurant at “Main Lodge”.

Day 5: Safari in Kariega Game Reserve and a visit to a local township

Today’s morning safari is combined with a boat ride on the Kariega River, giving you a chance to experience the animals and birds in a completely different way. Late morning, you head back to the lodge for brunch. You then have a few hours to spend at your leisure before a late lunch and afternoon safari.

One of the days at Kariega you visit a local township. Kariega has supported a group of young entrepreneurs who wanted to give guided tours of their local area, and thanks to The Kariega Foundation, this has become possible. The tour takes a good three hours, and on the way you will visit a local home and a “sangoma” – a traditional healer. Lunch is served at a small local restaurant. It is a really exciting tour and an excellent opportunity to learn more about South Africa and the local culture.

Day 6: Safaris and change of hotel

After today’s morning safari and brunch, you pack your things and move to the “River Lodge”, where you will be spending the next two nights. “River Lodge” is scenically situated in a completely different part of the wildlife reserve, set on the banks of the wide, calm Bushman’s River.  You will stay in a thatched suite. The quiet hours around midday offer you the opportunity to enjoy the pool. After a light lunch, the afternoon safari awaits you.

Possible upgrades

If you really want to spoil yourself on your last two nights in Kariega, we recommend upgrading from the 4-star River Lodge to the 5-star Settlers Drift.

Day 7: Safari, beach and canoe trip

The day starts with a morning safari. After brunch, a lovely boat trip on Bushman’s River awaits you. You are sailed all the way out to the beach at Kenton-on-Sea, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the Indian Ocean on one side or in the lagoon on the other. Do bear in mind, however, that the water comes from the South Pole, so this is no tropical dip! If you don’t wish to swim, you can go for a walk along the beach or just relax, perhaps with a good book.  In the afternoon, a guided canoe trip awaits you on the tranquil Bushman’s River. As you quietly paddle off, you experience the uninterrupted tranquillity of nature as you spot the abundant birds and the animals grazing by the banks of the river.  It’s a completely different kind of safari to the one when you’re in a car.

Day 8: Return flight

After breakfast, you will be driven to the airport in Port Elizabeth to catch your flight back to the UK.
You will fly to the UK with connecting flights along the way.

Day 9: Return home

Arrive safely back in the UK after a holiday packed with wonderful experiences.
