The tour in short

Perhaps you’ve been to South Africa before and fell in love with Cape Town? Perhaps Namibia’s red sand dunes and blue skies are high on your wish list?

This tour is for those who have perhaps been on a safari before, but who now dream of experiencing more of southern Africa.

The tour kicks off with three full days in Cape Town. The time is yours to do as you please, and there’s plenty to see and do in one of Africa’s most charming big cities. You can choose to organise your excursions and experiences yourself, but it is also possible to go on one or more organised excursions. Almost no matter what your interests are, you’ll feel well entertained in Cape Town.

After Cape Town, the beautiful, desolate landscapes of Namibia await. You’ll visit the “German” town of Swakopmund with its special architecture, and the unique landscapes of Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. The tour in Namibia is with a local guide.

As an added bonus, the tour only goes to malaria-free areas.

Departure from the UK to Cape Town with connecting flight(s) along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Cape Town

On your arrival in Cape Town, you will be met at the airport and driven to your hotel. You will spend 4 nights in Cape Town.

Days 3-5: Experiences in Cape Town

The day is yours to do whatever you please, and you can explore Cape Town at your own pace. Whatever you’re interested in, we almost dare promise you’ll find it here.

Explore the stunning metropolis, which has everything the heart desires in the way of exciting sights, on your own, or purchase one or more excursions from home.

How about a trip to wine country where you can taste some of the excellent South African wines that the country produces? Or is a trip to Hermanus, the whale capital south of Cape Town to whale watch during whale season, something for you? If seeing penguins is a must-do for you, you should definitely head to Cape Point and Boulders Beach. If you’re one for exercise, you can hike to the top of Table Mountain, and if you’re interested in history, we recommend you go on a guided tour of the city. There are plenty of experiences to be had in beautiful Cape Town.

Day 6: Cape Town – Swakopmund

You will be picked up from your hotel in Cape Town and driven to the airport, from which you will fly to Walvis Bay in Namibia.

You will be met by our local partner and driven to your hotel in Swakopmund. The rest of the day is yours to do as you please.

Accommodation:
Day 7: Experiences in Swakopmund

The Namib Desert is the world’s oldest desert and covers an area of approx. 50,000 km2.

In the middle of the desert – all the way out on the Atlantic coast – you’ll find the charming little coastal town of Swakopmund.

The town was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for the German South West Africa colony. A large proportion of the population still speaks German. Swakopmund houses a large number of historic buildings, considered some of the finest examples of German colonial style architecture in the world.

It’s up to you what you do today, and you don’t need a guide to find your way around the town. Explore the history and architecture of the town, or visit The Jetty, one of Swakopmund’s landmarks.

You can also purchase one of our extra excursions, which include a trip out of town to experience the desert scenery on a quad bike in the sand dunes – great fun and quite the adrenaline kick.

Day 8: Swakopmund – Sossusvlei

It’s time to say goodbye to Swakopmund and head out into the desert surrounding the town. Here in the desert, you’ll discover the world’s highest sand dunes.

The drive alone from Swakopmund to Sossusvlei is one of the highlights of your visit to Namibia. The scenic Gaub Pass offers fantastic scenery where you might even have to pinch yourself.

In the midst of it all is the small town of Solitaire. In 1948, Willem Christoffel van Coller acquired the land here for the purpose of running a sheep farm. His wife renamed the place Solitaire – perhaps an indication of what she thought of her husband’s project… Today, “the town” is a stop for virtually all visitors on their way to Sossusvlei.

Late afternoon, you reach your actual goal of the day: Sossusvlei, where you check in at your lodge. There’s time to purchase an afternoon excursion if you feel like it.

Please note: For departures on 6 August and 17 August 2021, you will stay at Tsauchab River Camp on instead of A Little Sossus Lodge.

Day 9: Experiences in Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon

Today, you’ll visit some of Namibia’s iconic sights: the magical sand dunes.

Dune 45 is probably one of the world’s most famous sand dunes. Located in Sossusvlei, its name comes from the fact that it is 45 km after Sesriem on the road to Sossusvlei. It is probably also one of the most photographed sand dunes in the world, simply because it is so perfectly shaped and so easily accessible. Of course, you, too, get the chance to photograph Dune 45. In many ways, the real highlight of the day is, however, the colours. The earthy reds and oranges, which are a stark contrast to the bright blue sky. This is precisely how Namibia is often depicted.

Sesriem Canyon is also on the itinerary today. Sesriem Canyon is a natural canyon carved out by the waters of the Tsauchab River which have flowed through for millions of years. It rarely rains here, but when it does, it really pours, and the soil can’t absorb the water quickly enough. It meanders into cracks and holes and over time has created the canyon where you’ll be going on a small hike today.

You’ll be back at the lodge late afternoon, when you can enjoy the pool or take part in some of the lodge’s activities.

Please note: For departures on 6 August and 17 August 2021, you will stay at Tsauchab River Camp on instead of A Little Sossus Lodge.

Day 10: Sossusvlei – Windhoek

You set off early today to Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, giving you the afternoon in the city.

Windhoek is the largest city in the country, as the selection of restaurants and shops shows. It is a modern city with a clear architectural influence from the German colonial era. Christ Church is in many ways the city’s landmark. If you’re interested in history, we recommend a visit to the old fort, which was founded in 1890 but today houses a museum. This is also a good chance to buy those last souvenirs for your loved ones at home – visit, for example, Namibia Craft Centre.
