Day 1: Departure from the UK
Day 1: Departure from the UK

Departure day, where you will fly to South Africa with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve
Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve

On arrival, you will be met by an English-speaking driver, who will take you to the Kariega Game Reserve. This is a trip of around 120 km, which will take approx. 1½ hours.

Kariega Game Reserve is a private, family-owned game reserve covering around 10,000 hectares – an area approximately the size as Jersey. The game reserve was established around 20 years ago in an area of outstanding natural beauty featuring a ridge of hills, valleys and two rivers. The countryside here comprises both bush and open areas of grassland, as well as wet meadows and dry hillsides. All in all, it provides magnificent conditions for the animals. And there are plenty of them, First and foremost the ‘Big Five’: lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards and buffalo. There are many other exciting and exotic species here as well, such as the beautiful impala; the waterbuck, which you can recognise by the white ring on its bottom; the eland – the largest species of antelope – which can weigh almost 1 tonne; the kudu, with its impressive twisted horns; the shy and retiring jackal; and others you are sure to recognise: the zebra, hippopotamus, giraffe, gnu, warthog and baboon. Of course, there are plenty of fascinating species of bird to see as well.

Upon arrival you will be accommodated in the 4-star “Main Lodge” in a luxury chalet.

Day 3: Walking safari
Day 3: Walking safari

In the afternoon, you will be going on a walking safari, a totally different experience of the nature and animals. Here, it is no longer the big animals that are in focus, but the smaller animals, plants, sounds and smells. You might spot the chameleon or the tireless dung beetles rolling elephant dung in which to lay their eggs. The guide also teaches you how to tell the difference between animal tracks. A walking safari gives you a much better understanding of your surroundings. Please note that children must be aged 16+ to join this walking safari. For families with younger children, there is a child-friendly bush walk every morning – also with your own ranger.

Again today, all meals are served in the restaurant at “Main Lodge”.

Day 4: Visit to a local township

One of the days at Kariega you visit a local township. Kariega has supported a group of young entrepreneurs who wanted to give guided tours of their local area, and thanks to The Kariega Foundation, this has become possible. The tour takes a good three hours, and on the way you will visit a local home and a “sangoma” – a traditional healer. Lunch is served at a small local restaurant. It is a really exciting tour and an excellent opportunity to learn more about South Africa and the local culture.

Again today, all meals are served in the restaurant at “Main Lodge”.

The tropical island of Mauritius is one of the most fascinating islands in the Indian Ocean and an absolute gem if you are travelling with children. The island is surrounded by crystal clear water and beautiful, child-friendly beaches that are protected by a brightly coloured coral reef – making this the perfect place to go snorkelling.
