The malaria-free Kariega Game Reserve is located in the heart of the spectacular, verdant Kariega River Valley. The landscape between Kariega River and Bushman’s River is beautiful and varied, featuring both thickly wooded hills and open grassy plains. In the centre of it all stands the family-friendly Main Lodge, which is fenced in out of consideration for the children. The game guides are all trained in working with children, so they know how to make safari experiences come alive for the little ones. In addition to the ‘Big Five’ – elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinoceroses and leopards – the game reserve is home to hippopotamuses, hyenas, eland deer, giraffes, gnus, impala, jackals, zebras and many, many of the other species of animal indigenous to the region. The birdlife population spans a huge range, from kingfishers to eagles. When you are not on safari, you can enjoy your giant ‘chalet’ – a luxury holiday home with a magnificent view. You may even be lucky enough to have one with a pool. The lodge and the communal areas present full 4-star accommodation and service, and the stay is all-inclusive.

Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve
Day 2: Port Elizabeth – Kariega Game Reserve

On arrival, you will be met by an English-speaking driver, who will take you to the Kariega Game Reserve. This is a trip of around 120 km, which will take approx. 1½ hours.

Kariega Game Reserve is a private, family-owned game reserve covering around 10,000 hectares – an area approximately the size as Jersey. The game reserve was established around 20 years ago in an area of outstanding natural beauty featuring a ridge of hills, valleys and two rivers. The countryside here comprises both bush and open areas of grassland, as well as wet meadows and dry hillsides. All in all, it provides magnificent conditions for the animals. And there are plenty of them, First and foremost the ‘Big Five’: lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards and buffalo. There are many other exciting and exotic species here as well, such as the beautiful impala; the waterbuck, which you can recognise by the white ring on its bottom; the eland – the largest species of antelope – which can weigh almost 1 tonne; the kudu, with its impressive twisted horns; the shy and retiring jackal; and others you are sure to recognise: the zebra, hippopotamus, giraffe, gnu, warthog and baboon. Of course, there are plenty of fascinating species of bird to see as well.

Upon arrival you will be accommodated in the 4-star “Main Lodge” in a luxury chalet. In addition to the 15 chalets each with 3 bedrooms, there is a wonderful common area with restaurant, swimming pool and spa. Families of two adults and minimum one child, receive their own chalet. If you wish to have a chalet with private pool, this is £200 extra in total.

Day 3: Safari in Kariega Game Reserve

You will be woken at sunrise, and will have time to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the restaurant before heading off to enjoy the day’s safari. Early in the morning is the best time to go on safari, as this is the time when the animals are most active, hunting for food. Safari trips at Kariega take place in open 4-wheel-drive vehicles with room for max. 10 people. (There are several safari vehicles available if you are travelling with a group of more than 10 people). Your driver will take you around the reserve to spot the different animals, while the knowledgeable guides talk about the local flora and fauna. Around mid-morning, you will return to the Main Lodge to enjoy a delicious late breakfast featuring everything you could wish for. It is then time to return to your luxury chalet for a few hours’ rest. Lunch is served in the early afternoon, and then at around 16.00, it is time to head out on safari once more. In the late afternoon, many of the large animals make their way to the watering holes to drink, and as sunset approaches the guides call a halt and serve what are known as ‘sundowners’ – wine, juice and snacks – to round off a wonderful day of safaris.

Back at the Main Lodge, dinner is served and you have time to look back on a day packed with exciting experiences.

The afternoon is devoted to a hiking safari, which gives you a completely different perspective on the countryside and the animals. There is a ‘predator-free’ area of the reserve where everyone can enjoy a wonderful hiking safari in safety. You may be lucky enough to spot a chameleon or the tireless dung beetles, which continuously roll balls of elephant dung to incubate their eggs. The guide will also teach you how to differentiate between the tracks left by a variety of animals.

Once more, all meals are served in the restaurant at the Main Lodge.

Day 5: Visit to nature conservation projects in Kariega Game Reserve

This day is given over to a visit to one of Kariega’s conservation projects. A lot of work is being done in the leopard project to maintain and regenerate the population of leopards in the area. The rhinoceros project, on the other hand, is focused on combating the poaching of rhinoceroses. Three rhinoceroses in the Kariega Game Reserve were attacked by poachers in 2012, although one of them miraculously survived. Following this incident, the management decided to join the national project to protect the rhinoceros. The elephant project centres on registering the individual elephants and recording their impact on the landscape of the reserve.

Once again, all meals are served in the restaurant at the Main Lodge.
