Kiboko Lodge

Arusha

At the foot of Mount Meru and just a stone’s throw from Arusha National Park is the cosy Kiboko Lodge.

The lodge is owned by a Dutch organisation that works with street children throughout Tanzania. The children are given an education and the promise of work if they complete a 4-year education programme. The lodge is therefore also run by former street children who have learned how to manage such a business and provide guests with the best possible service.

There are 19 rooms of varying sizes and with different decoration. All the rooms have an en suite bathroom and toilet, a fireplace and a private veranda overlooking the surrounding nature and providing a glimpse of Mt Meru.

The conditions of the street children are not the only thing that the foundation is trying to improve. The environment is also very much in focus throughout. The lodge is primarily powered by solar energy and is built of local materials. Some of the furniture comes from the foundation’s own workshop. The lodge is, of course, also partly self-sufficient when it comes to the food served there: Fruit and vegetables are grown in the lush volcanic soil around the lodge.

The lush surroundings attract a wealth of exotic birds, and the waterhole by the lodge is home to a hippo – “kiboko” in Swahili.
