Whether you come to Zanzibar after a safari tour or a trek to the top of Kilimanjaro, you’ll be needing relaxation, a cosy atmosphere, self-pampering, good food, massage and a dip in the sea. You’ll find all of this at Spice Island Hotel & Resort, which is located in the south-eastern part of the island.
Decorated in classic Zanzibar style, the family-run hotel has its own private beach and is all but located in a large botanical garden with more than 3,000 exotic plants, trees and flowers.
The resort oozes holiday atmosphere and relaxation. The communal areas are incredibly cosy and the entire resort has a special vibe, which makes you feel completely relaxed and very welcome immediately.
The restaurant and lounge area are furnished with lovely soft sofas, chairs and daybeds in dark wood and leather, spiced up with cushions and throws in vibrant colours. With its cosy atmosphere and the beautiful view of the beach and the sea, it’s hard to tear yourself away from here, and we’re sure this will become your favourite area at the resort. Borrow a book from the library or take a nap in the breeze from the garden.
If you manage to leave the lounge, you can go for a stroll out on the long jetty and enjoy even more views and ocean breezes – and have a nice cup of coffee in the cosy lounge bar at the end of the jetty. At low tide, you can jump into the water from the steps on the jetty – and afterwards enjoy a cold drink and a snack at the bar. Throw yourself into a hammock and have yet another nap.
If you feel the need to do something, you can jump into the pool or add a spot of excitement to your holiday by purchasing tours incorporating interesting water sports activities in the hotel’s own water sports centre.
When you travel with Africa Safari, you get a 15% discount on the water sports activities on Spice Island, and you can borrow reef shoes and Fat Bikes free of charge (if available).
You also get 20% off all spa treatments – much needed, no doubt, if you’ve been up Kilimanjaro or on safari…

A few metres from the white sandy beach and the turquoise-blue sea, you will find the Sultan Sands hotel. The pool, the restaurant and the cosy bar afford great views of the sea – interrupted only by beautiful palm trees.
All 100 rooms are set in a huge tropical garden filled with fragrant trees and exotic flowers. Wherever you go, you will be able to hear the chirping of birds and smell the flowers.
The service level is high and the hotel offers a wealth of activities. If you tire of lying by the large pool or in the shade of a palm tree, you can try your hand at windsurfing, play beach volleyball or perhaps enjoy a relaxing massage at the lovely day spa. There is also a small shop selling nice souvenirs. Free Wi-Fi is available in the communal areas. Some of the hotel’s facilities are found at the sister hotel “Bluebay Beach Resort”, which all but adjoins Sultan Sands.
The hotel has 80 standard rooms,
56 of which are located in round cottages built in true African style with a thatched roof. There are two rooms to each cottage, but the rooms have their own entrance from each side of the cottage, so it feels like you have your own cottage. All rooms are well-appointed, with a private terrace and plenty of space. You are only a few minutes’ walk from the pool and the beach.
24 of the standard rooms are located in six two-storey buildings a little way up a hill next to the reception. There are four rooms in each building, all of which have their own terrace or balcony with plenty of space to relax and read a book. These rooms have their own pool and bar area, but naturally you can stroll down to the hotel pool or to the beach in no time.
The last 20 rooms are little cottages located near the restaurant, just a stone’s throw from the beach. All of these cottages have their own large veranda and access to a private pool (with sea view), which can only be used by guests staying in these rooms. All the cottages are located very close to the beach, the restaurant, the bar and both the private pool and the large communal pool.

The beach is perfect. The sand is white, the water is turquoise and there is no tide.

Enjoy a trip to the day spa or take part in a yoga class. Swim a few lengths of the 32-metre infinity pool, which overlooks the ocean. Cooking classes are offered in the spice garden – or you can grab a book and enjoy a quiet moment in one of the many cosy corners of the garden.
