Travelogue from Mauritius: Mauritius is more than a beach vacation

If you choose a trip to Mauritius, you can look forward to a vacation with fantastic resorts, exquisite service, lots of sun, gorgeous sandy beaches and the most beautiful waters.

However, that isn’t the only thing the island has to offer. J There are numerous opportunities for excursions, and one of my personal favorites is a guided bike tour on the electric bikes.

We rode in the area around Chamarel which is located by the Black River Gorges National Park in the southwest of Mauritius.

We were picked up at the hotel and driven tsso the starting point, where we got our bikes and individual helmets, which were customized. Before starting, we also got some time to just try out how our “helper” (the motor) functioned. It was namely the electro-bike doing the work which meant that the mountain cycling was a pure pleasure. Those who wanted to burn a little extra could easily refrain from making use of the “helper”.

The trip lasted about 4 hours and we cycled approx. 25 km altogether.

The first stop was at Chamarel Falls. Chamarel Falls tumbles more than 100 meters down against a beautiful, scenic backdrop of forests and mountains and after a short walk down a trail, there was an amazing view of the waterfall.

Moving off on the bikes again, the tour progressed to the Seven Colored Earth. Seven Colored Earth is a geological phenomenon caused by the erosion of volcanic rocks. It is a relatively small area of sand dunes, comprising seven different colors of shimmering sand; hence its name. Despite it being a short stop, you will truly be fascinated by the rolling, multi-colored dunes and moon-like landscape.

After a lovely cup of coffee and a little rest, it was back up on the bike again and now the tour went downhill. Whizzing past the most beautiful landscapes of green sugarcane and pineapple fields and stretches of bougainvillea, the tour then made its way through small villages, down to the coast. We cycled along the water and up to Charles Telfairs’ old colonial château. This has now been turned into a restaurant with a beautiful surrounding garden.The tour ended at an old sugar factory with a refreshingly cool glass of lemon juice after which, our driver drove us back to the hotel.
