Why go on safari in South Africa?

South Africa is a well-known safari destination, where you can see verdant countryside, experience peerless cultural history, and admire large numbers of wild animals – including ‘the Big Five’.

South Africa is the ideal choice for everyone keen to experience an incredibly varied collection of wildlife in Kruger National Park. In addition, our South Africa range includes malaria-free safaris and family safaris, organised especially for families with children.

Not only is South Africa a fantastic safari destination, but it is also the perfect self-drive-by destination where you can discover the scenic, world-renowned Garden Route.

What can you see and do on a holiday in South Africa?

Safari centred on Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park features an impressive game reserve that is home to large numbers of a wide variety of animals, including 147 species of mammal, 118 different types of reptile, and almost 520 different species of bird.

In addition to a traditional safari in the national park, the holiday features:

  • A bush walk, where you can learn to identify animals by their tracks
  • A Sunset Game Drive – a three-hour safari starting at sunset
  • A trip to the breath-taking Drakensberg Mountains

Kruger National Park is the perfect place for everyone looking to observe a great many species of animal in South Africa’s biggest national park.

Safari centred on Kariega Game Reserve

Kariega Game Reserve is located in the heart of the verdant Kariega Valley, a well-known, malaria-free area where you can see all kinds of animals – including ‘the Big Five’ – from open-top jeeps.

Kariega Game Reserve is an ideal choice if you are travelling with children, or if you simply want to experience beautiful, varied countryside featuring rivers, wooded hills, grassy plains and, of course, all kinds of wild animals in a malaria-free area.

Combination options for South Africa Holidays

If you would like to experience more of Africa, you can combine your holiday with a stay in magnificent Cape Town, a safari in Botswana, a luxury beach holiday on the tropical paradise of Mauritius, or avisit to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Combine with Cape Town

Cape Town is the second-largest city in South Africa. Large parts of the city are intensely modern, marking a sharp contrast to the older quarters with their narrow streets, lined with small shops, museums, flea markets and charming pavement cafés. Join one of the fascinating organised tours or explore the city for yourself.

You can also visit Table Mountain, which stands close to the city and provides a stunningly beautiful view out over the deep blue Atlantic Ocean. Or make your way to Robben Island, which now features on the UNESCO list of Cultural and Natural Heritage sites, and is probably best known as the prison where Nelson Mandela was jailed for 18 years

Choose the Cape Town combination if you would like to experience a South African metropolis distinguished by city life, beautiful mountains and all kinds of historical experiences.

Combine with a safari in Botswana

Round off your South African adventure with a tour to Botswana. Go on safari in the stunning Chobe National Park, one of Africa’s best national parks, or in the Okavango Delta, one of the world’s largest wetlands.

Chobe National Park

The 10,000 km2 national park offers infinitely beautiful and unspoilt nature, not to mention exciting wildlife. It is also known for its large number of elephants. In fact, it is home to one of the largest concentrations of elephants in Africa – some estimates say as many as 50,000. Besides elephants, you can see monkeys, giraffes, hippos, countless bird species and, if you’re lucky, all five of Africa’s big five, too.

The combination of a regular game drive in a Landcruiser and a cruise on the wide Chobe River gives you a varied and diverse safari experience. And you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful and more African sunset than from a riverboat on the Chobe River.

The Okavango Delta

The 14,000 km2 Okavango Delta is one of the largest wetlands in the world. It is a fascinating area which, despite its location in the middle of the otherwise dry Kalahari Desert, is filled with water that has flowed all the way from Angola’s mountains via the Okavango River to end up here, in the middle of nothing in Botswana. The wetlands are a unique source of drinking water for the many animals that migrate to the area during the dry season.

The delta is a unique safari destination. More than 500 different species of birds, thousands of elephants and some of the world’s most endangered large mammals such as cheetahs, white and black rhinos and African wild dogs live here.

Combine with Victoria Falls

You can also choose to round off your holiday with a trip to the breath-taking Victoria Falls, which straddle the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

There is every opportunity to head off on adventures here. Enjoy a helicopter ride over the Victoria Falls, go on a river safari on the Zambezi or get right up close to the elephants at the Elephant Café.

Choose the Victoria Falls combination if you would like to round off your safari holiday with the chance to go on wonderful excursions and enjoy nature treats of a whole new dimension.

Combine with Mauritius

Last but not least, you can finish off your safari trip with a relaxing beach holiday on exotic Mauritius, an island state set in the waters of the Indian Ocean. The island is the perfect base for various types of water sport, diving and snorkelling. You can also go shopping in the quaint little town of Grand Baie, where there are plenty of reasonably priced cafés and restaurants.

Choose the Mauritius combination if you would like to devote the last part of your holiday to relaxing on the beach in the lap of luxury.
