Why go on safari in Uganda?

Located in the eastern part of Central Africa, Uganda has – with good reason – been called ‘The Pearl of Africa’, and even though it is often neglected as a holiday destination, it is one of the most beautiful countries on the continent.

Choose Uganda if you would like to see mountain gorillas, unspoiled, verdant countryside, and a destination less well-known than the classic safari countries, which you can visit on our other African tours – to Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa, for example.

What is there to see and do in Uganda?

You can visit Uganda all year round, despite its location on the Equator and its two rainy seasons. The country has perhaps the lushest and most varied nature on the continent, featuring rainforests, savannah, rivers, volcanoes, mountains and lakes. Moreover, Uganda is one of the few places in the world where you can experience the endangered mountain gorillas living wild in their natural habitat.

Read on to find out more about what you can see and do on your holiday to Uganda.

Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Our holiday to Uganda takes you on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

This is one of the most popular national parks in Uganda, where you can experience varied countryside featuring open savannah and dense bush, as well as volcanoes and crater landscapes. The park is home to more than 95 species of mammal and around 500 different types of bird. On the safari, which leaves early in the morning, you are likely to encounter animals such as leopards, lions, hyenas, elephants and antelopes.

Gorilla-tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

While you are in Uganda, you simply must not pass up the chance to go gorilla-tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Almost half the world’s population of mountain gorillas living in the wild are to be found in the park, which also features on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In Bwindi, you head off into the bush with experienced rangers who accompany you on your search for the mountain gorillas. These rangers – or guides – are both highly skilled and experienced, so there is every chance you will get to see the magnificent creatures in their natural surroundings.

Other highlights of Uganda

In addition to the safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park and gorilla-tracking in Bwindi, there are plenty of other exciting things to see and do in Uganda. Our guest often mention the following as the highlights of their holidays:

  • Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha National Park
  • Evening safari in Lake Mburo National Park, the second-smallest national park in Uganda
  • Spending the night on the shores of Lake Victoria, the second-largest fresh water lake in the world
  • Chimpanzee-tracking in Kyambura Gorge
  • A boat trip along the Kazina Canal, looking for crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and more
